About Binxalot.com >

This web site is my personal web site that I use under the screen name Binxalot which I created many many years ago before the internet was widely available and people would go "online" by using a modem and logging in to BBS systems to play games like LORD and Kannons and Catapults :-D. I am old school, I grew up with the internet, I am fascinated by all it can do and has yet to do. I've gone back and forth with what I wanted to do with this web site, and now I finally have a good use for it.

The photographs on this web site are meant to be used in 3d software like Maya, Max, Blender, Lightwave, etc. Almost all of the textures on the site repeat on their x and/or y sides. I try to take these photographs on overcast days and not in direct sunlight. The 3d models on this site are saved as OBJ file which almost any 3d software program or 3d framework can use.

About My Textures: Faq:

Originally I photographed textures for use in some video game that I had some day hoped to make, but it's gone well beyond just taking photographs of repeating video game textures. For almost a decade now I've been taking digital photographs. 99% of these photographs sit collecting "digital dust" so-to-speak on many hard drives and memory cards. I take these photographs with an emphasis on textures, I show my "texture" photographs in photography art exhibitions in the Philadelphia area. I like to photograph textures because I find them visually interesting. When I go on vacations I will bring my camera, take a few money shots, the ones you are suppose to take, here and there, but the large majority of my photographs are of the places you are not meant to take a photograph of. Nobody photographs the dumpster behind a historic site, I do. I think it's funny how architects only care about the front facade of a building, they care nothing for the sides or the rear of a building, especially not the loading zone or the employee entrance. These areas are not kept up, they are allowed to be weathered and beaten, and generally make for some of my better texture shots.

I am an artist by trade, I have a BFA in animation. I am always up for a new project and enjoy working with developers to create new games and apps. So long as I have extra time I will gladly use it to create artwork. I share my texture photographs on this web site but I can also create 3d models, sound effects, and custom hand painted or hand drawn artwork. When working with a sole developer I get paid thru profit sharing on the project. When working with a team I will do generally do paid contract work. If you came to this web site looking for something specific and could not find it please email me and I'll see what I can do.

If you use my free textures in your game please send me an email when you are finished so I can link to your game and see the image in action!!

Why is your site so basic?
This web site may not look all too "professional" compared to the vast competition, but it's designed this way for quick load times and black to avoid causing any optical illusions or conflicting colors with the textures and the web site's background.

What type of camera do you use?
I use a Canon Rebel XT (first gen) DSLR with the stock lens and I also have a semi-fisheye lens which I use sometimes as well. I plan on using any profits I make from this web site to purchase a newer generation camera with a wide angle lens.

Why so many exterior shots?
I travel with my wife and sometimes my father-in-law. We are all artists (or art lovers) and we tend to vacation in places with historical significance (Paris, Berlin, Athens, Rome, etc.) We follow an itinerary while on vacation that allows us to visit as many sites as possible in what little time we have on vacation. I personally like to visit ruins, castles especially, but any type of ruin will do. I also enjoy visiting palaces and historical sites. Since taking photographs inside these types of places is prohibited or poorly lit, I tend to take more exterior shots. Interior textures tend to be pretty basic anyway, how many drywall shots do you need? Most texture is found in exterior locations anyway.

What locations do these photographs come from?
I tend to write the location in the description of the texture if it's significant but you will find textures from these locations on this web site: Greece (Athens, Delphi, Corinth). Ireland (Dublin, Cashel), Germany (Berlin, Dresden), France (Paris, Versailles), USVI. (St. Thomas, St. John) USA (Palm Beach, FL., Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Bushkill Falls, PA, Valley Forge, PA., New Jersey Shore & New York City.

I have also started uploading artificial textures which have been created from scratch in Photoshop.

What's with the strict copyright in the Terms of Service?
It's a necessary evil when selling photographic content on to the world wide web. Fact is people are going to try to download these textures without paying for them for use in their commercial works. I just want to make it clear that if you do that and get caught it will cost you more than the ninety nine cents you could have just paid to use it legitimately.
